Starting with some ideas developed during a pottery residency in Rome at C.R.E.T.A. in 2018, the concept of the black and white decorations has evolved and continues to take new directions. While some of the pots are purely ornamental, others are glazed internally and can be used as vases.

Crackle Glazes: Although it may be interpreted as a glaze fault, the oriental sensibility regards this ‘imperfection’ as a sign of beauty. The Song dynasty potters (960-1279) are thought to be the first to treat crazing as a decorative effect.

The glaze is often stained to highlight the pattern of crackles.

Snowflake Crackle glazes have a particular, layered appearance which lends great depth to the surface.

The black and white designs have a mesmerising effect and captivate the eye. The decoration is made with underglaze and it develops a subtle sheen without the need for glaze. The interiors of the vases are glazed to ensure that they are watertight.
